Previewing Oklahoma’s Lieutenant Governor Race

Posted

Oklahoma’s lieutenant governor wears several hats.

They preside over the state Senate, serve on nine boards and commissions and step in as acting governor when the governor is out of state or otherwise incapacitated.

Like the vice president at the federal level, they also help shape policy and promote economic development. For instance, incumbent Matt Pinnell has focused on promoting and expanding Oklahoma’s tourism industry while in office.

Oklahoma voters will elect a new lieutenant governor on Nov. 3, as Pinnell is term-limited. Here’s a look at the candidates and their plans if elected:

The Candidates:

  • Republican T.W. Shannon, 48, former House speaker and bank CEO from Lawton.
  • Democrat Kelly Forbes, 41, teacher, school administrator and consultant from Oklahoma City.

Their Policy Positions:

  • Shannon is a staunch conservative who aligns with President Donald Trump and frequently appears as a guest on right-leaning television shows. If elected, he says he would focus on economic development, including attracting new businesses and cutting regulations. He also vows to continue promoting tourism to the state.
  • Forbes touts his experience as a teacher and small business owner, saying it has prepared him for the various duties of the lieutenant governor. Along with the traditional economic development role, he says he would prioritize expanding healthcare access in rural areas and improving the state’s education rankings.
